Royal Lytham & St Annes |
| |
The most northern of England’s Championship links courses, Royal Lytham & St Annes has hosted the Open Championship ten times as well as the Ryder Cup, Curtis Cup, Women’s British Open and the Ladies’ Amateur, all on a number of occasions.
Unusually for a links course Royal Lytham & St Annes isn’t actually adjacent to the sea. Surrounded by suburban housing the course is still subject to the tough winds coming inland from the sea and is just 10 miles from Royal Birkdale.
Royal Lytham St Annes is famed for its ‘Dormy House’ sleeping up to 16 guests with 6 bathrooms and 2 shower rooms. Although not ideal for a long stay in the region the facilities provided are sufficient for a night or two, and compensated by the morning breakfast views of the course.
The shortest course on the British Open circuit, Royal Lytham & St Annes is also regarded as one of the toughest with over 200 bunkers, deep rough tight fairways and sloping greens.
Its 467 yard signature hole is also no mean feat and still holds a plaque remembering renowned golfer Bobby Jones, as a commemorative to his 1926 Open Championship victory.
Royal Lytham St Annes is an individual amongst the many links courses on the golfing coast.
