Royal Liverpool Golf Club

Founded in 1869 Royal Liverpool is the UK’s second oldest golf club and has been host to an array of tournaments including a staggering 11 Open Championships, Amateur Championship and the English Amateur Championship.

In 2006 the course was further developed for that year’s Open Championship and the clubhouse received a comprehensive refurbishment totalling around £2m.

Boarded on three sides by residential housing and with the Dee Estuary running along its western side, Royal Liverpool is built on a racecourse and is unusually flat for a links course. Despite its residential surroundings the course is still at the mercy of the elements with a strong wind often sweeping its flat fairways.

Royal Liverpool has been criticised for its featureless greens however it’s this that makes it such a testing round. The fairways are often very narrow and in some places do undulate meaning a major difficulty is to avoid the rough.
